My Role
UX Researcher + UX/UI Designer
Methods
client interview, comparative analysis, journey mapping, rapid prototyping, feature card development, scoping, kano analysis, high fidelity prototyping
Tools
Figma, Figjam, Google Suite, Zoom
Project Goals
Provide Lucid with prototyped suggestions for new features to make the app more marketable, that fit within their scope, tech constraints and design guidelines.
Lucid takes advantage of the accuracy of Apple Health’s biometric data capture and reports its own signature Lucid Aerobic Score so that athletes can spend their limited time optimizing their training.
The app intends to take the place of pricey devices like Whoop or Garmin watch, without having to buy another wearable.
Companies like Whoop and Garmin try to meet the needs of the masses by tracking a large swath of data, but since they cast the net so wide, the figures can often feel vast and like markers with no actual backing. They also require the purchase of a wearable.

The native fitness tracking app for Apple similarly tracks a seemingly endless amount of information but lacks the ability to provide meaningful insights to the user. This leaves Apple health users to decipher the data’s meaning without guidance. To understand how lucid compares to similar products’ functions and features, I performed a competitive audit.
Lucid’s Users
Primary Users
Millennial Endurance Athletes looking to achieve maximum gains by monitoring their health and fitness. They often juggle children and full time jobs, and have limited time or resources for training.
Secondary Users
Master Blasters looking to support their passion and continued fitness by optimizing their data and tinkering with their training plans. This group has time, money and dedication to their sport.
Next up, I created a user journey map to help me anticipate the actions, touch points, feelings and pain points that a user might encounter in a typical experience with a fitness apps similar to Lucid.
The major takeaway: the importance of product customizability and clear and simple data analysis.
User Journey Map
Outcome
Created 4 high fidelity designs for new features recommendations that support Lucid’s product and user goals.
Understanding the Foundation
Why Lucid?
Scoping + Design
Rapid Prototyping
Feature Cards
30 total software points were allocated for the development budget. Based on survey results, information gathered and stakeholder goals, I recommended and designed these features to add to Lucid:
Push Notifications
Workout Summary
Navigation Bar
Prompted Process Journal
After deepening my understanding of the current user experience, I did rapid feature prototyping to generate as many feature ideas as possible in a short amount of time.
From these, ten were selected for a Kano Analysis to understand user desirability of features.

Infectious Energy
The creators of Lucid were so intentional about their creation, and their excitement was infectious. It made understanding their product and designing features such a fun process, and made me really excited for the world to experience Lucid.
Understanding the Context
One difficulty I had was having very little familiarity with the terms and experience of users because I am as far away from an endurance athlete as it gets! Taking more time to learn more about this prior to the rapid prototyping would have helped me develop features that users would want instead of taking a shot in the dark.
